These papers contain declaration of ejectment by Edmund Randolph in the case of Ephraim Lloyd vs John Smith, General Court, 1786-1791. Included is John Marshall's signature as attorney for the defendant; and autograph note of John Marshall, Jr., in reply to Mr. Conrad in the case of Chin[n]s Heirs vs Murray, etc., undated (it was written after 1826 since Marshall refers to "4th Randolph 569"). Grattan's Reports of Cases Decided in the Supreme Court of Appeals and in the General Court of Virginia, IV, 3rd ed., p. 348-406 includes the suit of Chinn & als. vs Murray & als. under the January 1848 term. At that time the Supreme Court of Appeals reversed and annulled the decrees which had been rendered in this suit in 1819, 1836, and 1840.

John Marshall (1755-1835) was born near Germantown, Prince William (currently Fauquier) County, Virginia on 24 September 1755 to parents Thomas Marshall and Mary Randolph Keith.
